Insurance for Young Camper Van Drivers
The Volkswagen campervan is an automotive icon and is popular with younger drivers who want to experience the uniquely free motoring experience that owning one can bring. But for younger drivers, getting van insurance can be more expensive. So what are your options?
There are plenty of re-fitted and restored VW Campervans on the roads for younger drivers to take advantage of, and as of January 2010, brand new versions have gone back into production. The camper van’s association with the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s has meant that they are a sought-after item for 18-25 year olds, and perfect for music festivals, surf jaunts and beyond. But there is substantial evidence to prove that drivers in this age bracket are more likely to be involved in an accident on the roads, due to their lack of experience. Therefore, insurers drive up the costs of premiums accordingly due to the greater likelihood of having to pay out.
What sort of insurance do you need for a camper van?
Motorhome insurance, which covers the Volkswagen camper van, is split into three categories similar to that of car insurance. These are as follows:
Third Party Only
This covers possible injury to third parties and damage to their property.
Third party, fire and theft
With this level of cover, you get the features of a third party policy, plus the added cover for your vehicle against damage caused by fire or theft.
Fully Comprehensive
This is the most expensive level of cover, but it offers the greatest peace of mind. It has all the features of third party insurance, plus cover for your own vehicle. Optional extras for your camper van may include contents insurance, a temporary replacement van if yours is stolen.
Each insurer will have a set of circumstances in which the policy will be invalid. It’s important that you’re fully aware of what these circumstances are, so check thoroughly with your insurer.
If, as may be likely, there are any modifications to your camper van, you need to declare them to your insurer. As insurers are likely to bump up the cost of your premium due to the increased likelihood of theft, you might be tempted not to declare them. However, doing this and having to make a claim will invalidate your insurance.
However, there are ways of saving money on your camper van insurance premiums.
1. Safety first
Keeping your speed down and staying accident free can make you eligible for a discount from your insurer.
2. Get secure
Installing upgraded security systems mean that your camper van is less likely to be an object of theft. There are many ways and levels of expense you can take to address this: from buying a steering wheel lock to fitting an alarm and immobilizer. You could even install a tracking device, which will allow your van to be traced if it’s made off with. And if you’ve got a garage, make sure your van is locked up at night.
3. Limit your mileage
If you don’t mind limiting just how open the road is, a fixed mileage policy will reduce the chances of you being in an accident and reduce your premium accordingly.
4. Pay annually
A one-off annual payment on your insurance will bypass the charges incurred by paying in installments. If you’re able to, do it.
5. Shop around
Comparison websites have made it simple to quickly browse offers from many different insurance companies. Always compare what a policy offers you as well as the price: the cheapest might not always be the best.
